DOI: 10.1021/ja01636a026 Abstract The following ten papers published in Federation Proceedings (the journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology) are the presentations from the first thioctic acid conference (April 14, 1954 Atlantic City, NJ,) entitled “Symposium on the Metabolic Role of Lipoic Acid (Thioctic Acid)” which focused on the endogenous mechanisms and functions of enzyme-bound R-(+)-lipoic acid and its potential inhibitors (note: it was known by 1952 that the natural form of lipoic acid was dextrorotary. The absolute configuration was predicted in 1955 but unequivocal proof the (+)-isomer contained the R-configuration (using CahnIngold-Prelog priority rules) was not obtained until 1983. Kidder GW.
